Visitors are welcomed with a short slideshow about Macaw Recovery Network’s conservation efforts. A tour guide will take you to watch our released wild flock of Scarlet Macaws as they fly in from the surrounding area for their afternoon snack.

The site in Punta Islita is home to the organization’s Macaw Refuge and Breeding Center, where rescued or injured birds from both species that can not be released are kept for breeding purposes. Their young are then released into the wild.

Over 50 Scarlet Macaws have been released, creating the now famous Wild Scarlet Macaw Reserve, a must see when visiting the Nicoya Peninsula.

The Macaw Recovery Network’s mission is to recover endangered neotropical parrot populations by leading a network that develops and implements best practices in conservation. By visiting us, you’ll gain firsthand experience of this restoration work and 100% of your donations are used to support this mission.

The Scarlet Macaw and the Great Green Macaw are two of the most recognizable parrot species in the world, they are renowned for their beauty, intelligence, and charisma. However, because of recent and rapid declines in their numbers, they are in desperate need of your help. By protecting these birds and their habitat, together we can support biodiversity conservation in one of the worlds most biologically important areas.
