Located along The Palo Verde National Park, the Tempisque River is home to one of Central America’s most densely populated areas of migratory birds and aquatic species.
Palo Verde National Park is an extremely important area in Costa Rica as it encompasses over 45,000 acres (18210 hectares) of the Tempisque Conservation area and one of the most endangered ecosystems in Central America, tropical dry forest.

Furthermore, there are 15 different kinds of habitats from mangroves to swamps in Palo Verde, all home to thousands of animals throughout the year. During rainy season the Tempisque river overflows, creating the perfect habitat for the wildlife to spend their winter months.
Your naturalist guide will help you spot wildlife in the vegetation of dry forests and mangrove, there are more than 600 species of birds, local and migratory. You can also see animals like: iguanas, crocodiles and monkeys.
Birdwatchers world-wide come here to see species such as the boat-billed Heron in their natural habitat. During Wet Season, the park becomes home to more than 250,000 birds including migratory waterfowl from across the North American continent.
A stunning variety of birds call Palo Verde home. The park’s naturally humid climate also attracts many insects, amphibians and lizards. More than 55 species of reptile inhabit the park, and Palo Verde is where the largest concentration of freshwater crocodiles in Costa Rica is found. In addition, Palo Verde is also home to the largest population of jaguarundi, a reclusive species of big cat, in Costa Rica.
It is a migratory and resident waterfowl refuge, and its inhabitants are strictly protected by Costa Rican law.
